TRANSITIONS

Atlanta, Georgia -- The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) announces its upcoming exhibition, TRANSITIONS. The exhibit opens July 13, 2002 and remains on view through September 8, 2002. The exhibit and the accompanying catalogue features the work of six artists represented in the MOCA GA permanent collection. The artists will show this work from the collection along side new work. Many exhibiting artists will be present for the opening day, July 13 from 10 am until 5 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

This is the third exhibition for this new museum and the first to focus on artists whose work is included in the permanent collection. Ongoing support for the artists of the state of Georgia is the foundation of MOCA GA’s mission. With this in mind, MOCA GA is pleased to present this exhibition of works by the following artists.

The artists are:
Amalia Amaki Benny Andrewsi Linda Armstrongi
Philip Carpenter E. K. Huckaby Jim Waters

Amalia Amaki will install two new works that effectively use mass media techniques of film and marketing to manipulate our own human reflection. She continues to question how these altered images change the perceptions and the recognition of others and ourselves. As you enter the museum, you pass through an installation of earlier work by Linda Armstrong. This work serves as a passageway to the center gallery where she has filled the walls with drawings made by the spores and fluids from various species of mushrooms. Philip Carpenter’s colored pencil drawings are exquisitely rendered in a manner that can only be described as more than or beyond realism. Every detail is executed with hyper-diligence as though the “life” of the object depended upon the artist “getting it right.” E.K. Huckaby’s new series is a progression of eighteen small paintings of a candle burning shorter as the series comes to an end. The ambiguity of subject matter and the romance of the bizarre can be seen in this work as well as the earlier work from the MOCA GA collection. For sculptor, Jim Waters, this exhibition marks a return to the conical shape found in his earlier work. Using a wide variety of materials, this cone shape is beautifully crafted from layers of wood, paper painted with Liquid Rust, cardboard and in the newest work, Mylar.

To commemorate the founding of MOCA GA, Benny Andrews was commissioned to produce a lithograph with master printer, Wayne Kline at the Rolling Stone Press. This new work, Museumscape began a series titled Scapes, a series featuring interiorscapes, landscapes and cloudscapes. This new work and the lithograph will be presented in this exhibition.

The mission of the Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia is to collect and archive significant works of the artists in Georgia. MOCA GA seeks to make contemporary visual art more accessible by connecting local, living artists with diverse audiences in order to promote the understanding and appreciation of the visual arts in our state. The museum’s permanent collection contains more than 250 works of art by 110 artists who were born or spent a significant portion of their careers working in Georgia. The collection encompasses a wide range of media, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, installation art, and photographs.

MOCA GA is located at 1447 Peachtree Street, two blocks north of the High Museum of Art in Midtown Atlanta. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am until 5 pm, Sunday 12 noon – 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, contact Amy Parry, 404/881-1109.
