Kojo Griffin: At Work
(A Site-Specific Installation)
February 18 through March 30, 2003
Atlanta, Georgia -- The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia
(MOCA GA) announces its upcoming exhibition, Kojo Griffin:
At Work (A Site-Specific Installation). On February 18, 2003
the artist will begin work on this site-specific installation
in the museum’s exhibition space. The completed project
will remain on view through March 30, 2003. Opening day is
Tuesday, February 18 from 10 – 5. The event is free
and the public is invited to view the artist in the process
of producing this installation. .
Self-taught artist Kojo Griffin studied psychology at Morehouse
College in Atlanta, and graduated in 1992. His work was exhibited
in the Whitney Biennial 2000 at the Whitney Museum of American
Art and Freestyle at The Studio Museum in Harlem, 2001, Both
shows were in New York. He has had solo exhibitions at Cheekwood
Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, the Tubman African American
Museum in Macon, Georgia and the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte,
North Carolina. He is represented by the Mitchell-Innes &
Nash gallery in New York.
Griffin places his figures, with human-like bodies and animal
heads, in the midst of real-life situations involving unresolved
emotions of grief, alienation, abuse, rejection and neglect.
His anthropomorphic figures are at once playful in form and
pained in emotion, often facing acts of violence, acting out
in rage, or dealing with loss. Griffin’s work reveals
universal behavior and disarms the viewer’s ability
to judge the character’s racial identity or social status.
Kojo Griffin’s solo exhibition at MOCA GA provides
a unique opportunity for the artist to produce work not confined
by the size limitations of a canvas. Although he has drawn
directly on walls for previous shows, this is the first occasion
for him to create an installation in the entire exhibition
space. The public is invited to view the artist and his progress
during the 6 week period of his show.
The mission of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia is
to collect and archive significant works of the artists living
in Georgia. MOCA GA seeks to make contemporary visual art
more accessible by connecting local, living artists with diverse
audiences in order to promote the understanding and appreciation
of the visual arts in our state. The museum’s permanent
collection contains more than 260 works of art by 115 artists
who were born or spent a significant portion of their careers
working in Georgia. The collection encompasses a wide range
of media, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures,
installation art and photographs.
MOCA GA is located at 1447 Peachtree Street, two blocks north
of the High Museum of Art in Midtown Atlanta. Museum hours
