PAST DRAW @ MOCA WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

  • July 14, 2012 / The Shadow

Students will be looking at Kevin Cole's exhibit Straight from the Soul. This workshop will focus on the sometimes overlooked importance of the shadow in observational drawing. Students will study artists for whom the shadow plays an important role. They will then work from sketchbooks to uncover the complex shadow world created by Kevin Cole 's work, using primarily graphite and charcoal.

  • August 11, 2012 / The Figure in Motion

Students will be working from the figures in motion during the live event that will be taking place during Martha Whittington's Exhibition. This day will feature techniques and instructional training for drawing the figure. Students will discuss different approaches to the gesture through different mediums to better equip students with the skills needed to quickly capture the body in motion.

  • September 8, 2012 / Stamp Out!

Students will begin by looking at the work from the Atlanta Printmaker's Exhibit and briefly discuss some of the different processes and techniques that were employed by the artists. Students will then be working hands on with everyday printmaking techniques that can help expand the portfolio of ideas that one can bring to a drawing.

  • October 13, 2012 / Looking Through Text

We will begin by looking at Brian Dettmer's Exhibit and lead a discussion about the work. Then we will introduce a world renowned Altered Book titled The Humument by Tom Phillips. Building from these two sources we will experiment with found text and imagery to create artwork.

  • November 10, 2012 / Portfolio Day

We will be working with students one on one by looking through their portfolios and sketchbooks to provide feedback and share techniques to help improve the quality and effectiveness of their presentation.

  • December 8, 2012 / Experimental Approaches to Drawing

This will be a really fun day. We will be introducing new ways to explore and expand the experience of making drawings. Angus and Paul will share some of their new work and discuss their unique approaches to harvesting ideas for drawings. This day will serve as an introduction for students to the diverse and ever expanding world of contemporary drawing as a practice.

About Angus & Paul

Angus Galloway and Paul Rodecker are artists and educators in the Atlanta area. Both artists, who received MFAs from Georgia State University, utilize drawing in making their own artwork. Through their Drawing Correspondence project, they collaborated on many drawings by mailing journals back and forth, communicating with one another through marks and imagery. In 2009, and exhibition of work from some of these journals was installed at MOCA GA.
