Martin Emanuel, Sang-Wook Lee, Martha Whittington:  Installations
For this exhibition MOCA GA has invited 3 Georgia artists to create major installations.  The Museum will be divided into distinct spaces for each artist to explore the conceptual use of a singular medium.  Atlanta sculptor Martin Emanuel, whose exhibition Sculpture opened MOCA GA in February 2002, returns with work that will employ projected light as its main visual component.  Sang-Wook Lee, a Korean native and professor of Sculpture at Georgia College and State University, will use the architectural ruins of Native American cultures as his inspiration for a construction of Ramen noodles that references his interest in cross-cultural architectural history.  Atlanta-born Martha Whittington will create a sculptural composition using twine, shadow and mechanized motion, drawing the viewer through a specific arrangement of forms.

MOCA GA’s largest annual fundraiser, MOCA GALA Art Auction returns again this year with silent and live auction offerings of affordable, high quality works of art by an invitation-only, select group of Georgia’s best artists.  Honorary Co-chairs for the event are Elliott Goldstein and his lovely daughter, Lily Friedlander.  Host Committee Co-chairs are Betsy and David Baker and the Event Co-chairs are Tina and Scott Sorrels.  Dan Carithers returns again this year as event designer, as does the auctioneer for the evening, the ever humorous Jim Landon.  Our patrons and participating artists will be honored at a Patrons Party hosted by the Powell Goldstein law firm.  Also scheduled is a Preview Party for collectors, patrons and artists.  Last year was a blast – every piece of art was sold and everyone had a glorious time.

Genevieve
Georgia artist Genevieve Arnold was a major figure in Georgia’s arts community, not only as an artist, but as a curator, arts administrator, a dedicated supporter of contemporary arts, and a champion of the artists that reside throughout the state.  In its first foray into a major retrospective, MOCA GA seeks to pay tribute to the significant contribution of the life and work of this Georgia artist by mounting a major retrospective of her 55-year career.  This exhibition will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. (NMWA).  In celebration of this anniversary, the National Museum’s Georgia Committee will make a donation of a major piece of Arnold’s work to the National Museum’s permanent collection, commemorating the significance of Arnold as one of Georgia’s major contemporary artists of the second half of the last century.

Benny Andrews (from Atlanta collections)
MOCA GA pays tribute to the significant contributions of one of Georgia’s leading African-American artists with this solo exhibition.  Guest curated by Louisa McIntosh, this exhibition will feature major works by Georgia artist Benny Andrews from public and private collections around Atlanta.  In celebration of this important artist, MOCA GA will curate two shows of his work, one in Atlanta, and one at the Madison Morgan Cultural Center, located in Andrews’ hometown.  This collaboration will enable MOCA GA to provide access to its exhibitions and programming for a broader and more diverse audience beyond Atlanta.  Nationally recognized as an artist, teacher, author, activist, and advocate of the arts, Andrews passed away in December of 2006, as this exhibition was in development.  The artist was a vivid storyteller, using memories of his childhood in the segregated South to create narrative-based works that addressed human suffering and injustice.  He explored American life in his collages, prints, paintings, and drawings by fusing memory and imagination.  The guest curator, Louisa McIntosh, was the owner and Director of the McIntosh Gallery in Atlanta for 20 years, and represented Andrews for many years.  She is recognized for her early support of diverse and under-represented artists, both locally and nationally.
