| Benny Andrews was born in Madison, Georgia in 1930, and received his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1958. Andrews served as a Professor of Art at Queen’s College (CUNY). He was the recipient of many awards and honors including the John Hay Whitney Fellowship, The New York State Council Grant, and the O’Hara Prize, Tokyo, Japan. Andrews exhibited in solo and groups shows at the nation’s leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Boston Museum of Fine Art, Massachusetts; The Detroit Academy of the Arts, Michigan; and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. His work is represented in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Hirshorn Museum and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta; The Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts; The New Orleans Museum of Art; and MOCA GA, among others. Andrews' work has acquired international recognition, and was the 2005 recipient of the Abby Award for lifetime achievement in the arts. In 2007 MOCA GA mounted a retrospective exhibition of his work in Benny Andrews: A Georgia Artist Comes Home. |
