Alex Harris

b. 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia

Alex Harris grew up in the south. He graduated from Yale in 1971. in 1980 he founded the Center for Documentary Photography at Duke University, and subsequently the Center for Documentary Studies. He also cofounded DoubledTake Magazine with Robert Coles and served as editor for more than 12 years. Harris has extensively photographed the American South, Mexico, Alaska, and Cuba. He work had been collected by the High Museum of Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The North Carolina Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The awards he has received have included a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography, a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowship, and Lyndhurst Prize. He has exhibited extensively and published 14 books, the most recent of which is titled , "Why We Are Here," a collaboration with E.O. Wilson. He currently lives in North Carolina.
